Publishing with a Hybrid Press Ever since I signed the contract with  She Writes Press  for the publication of my debut novel,  This Is How It Begins  (available now), writers have been asking, â€Å"Why did you choose a hybrid press?† First, what is a hybrid press? A hybrid press walks the line between traditional publishing (the â€Å"Big 5† of HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Simon Schuster, Hachette and Macmillan) and self-publishing (CreateSpace, Kindle Direct, Ingram Spark), taking aspects from each. I chose a hybrid press for several reasons:   Ã‚     After 14 months of getting close but not close enough to land a literary agent, I got impatient with the lengthy process and decided to take matters into my own hands.   Ã‚     I decided against self-publishing because I wanted traditional distribution to bookstores, and that’s not something I could do myself.   Ã‚     I also decided against self-publishing because I knew I wouldn’t have the bandwidth to learn everything there is to learn in a timely fashion.   Ã‚     I wanted to work with a publisher who had ample experience with publishing and selling books, and I wanted a team to give my book its best chance. The Chinese Han Empire, which date from 206 BC to 220 AD, and the Indian Gupta Empire, which date from 375 AD to 550 AD, were elaborate kingdoms that thrived during their time. Although Han China and Gupta India were politically stable, Han China’s developing bureaucracy was centralized, while Gupta India was much more regionalized. Han China and Gupta India both featured extensive internal trade; however Gupta India was more involved with trade. Both empires had many intellectual achievements but Han China had much more innovative achievements, as in improving things, while Gupta India was much more dynamic, meaning the Indians worked on theories and then proved them. Something the Gupta Empire and the Han Empire had in common was that the emperors of these empires both believed they were chosen from the gods to rule. Han China had a very centralized bureaucracy which meant the emperor ruled over China, and this helped the rulers rule over a vast amount of land. The bureaucracy was capable of carrying out the duties of a complex state. In Gupta India, however, their government was regionalized meaning there were many local rulers ruling over certain regions. There was not much emphasis on politics in Gupta India so they did not develop solid political institution, like Han China did. There were very few formal political values or institutions besides regionalism so the political culture was not as involved or intricate. Despite the fact that both Han China and Gupta India had a deal of internal and external trade, the Gupta Empire was much more involved in trading overall. In Han China, much of the trade focused on luxury items for the upper class, such as silk, jewelry, leather goods and furniture. They also traded food and copper coins once they began to circulate. The Gupta Empire traded things such as cotton, silk, dyes, drugs, gold, ivory and more, getting in return pottery, wine, metals, slaves and gold. The merchants in the Han Empire were not as respected as they were in the Gupta Empire because of the Confucian emphasis on learning and politics, not on money-making. In the Gupta Empire, merchants were of relatively high class according to the caste system. Even though the Gupta and the Han both were involved in trade, both were largely agricultural societies so they depended greatly on the peasant class. The two empires, Han and Gupta, both had many intellectual achievements, although it could be argued that the Indians had much more of a variety. The Gupta Empire was more dynamic than the Han, meaning it was open and branched out much more. During the time of the Gupta Empire, they developed pieces of literature and Indian drama flourished. Their most notable intellectual achievements were the Indian numbering system, the concept of zero, and the decimal system. In the Han Empire, people were encouraged to not stray away from practicality. Chinese scientists were always improving their machinery and they invented a seismograph. The Han focused more on how things worked, which is why Chinese scholars would study the mathematics in music. One may assume that Han China and Gupta India were only different but that is not the case. As well as their many differences, such as a bureaucracy in China and a regionalized government in India, both empires were politically stable with rulers that believed they were chosen by the gods to rule. Despite Gupta India having more emphasis on trading, both empires were agricultural societies which depended on the peasant class. The Gupta Empire and the Han Empire both had an abundance of intellectual achievements although the Gupta Empire was much more dynamic while the Han Empire was restraint. Both empires blossomed in their time because of the many characteristics that make an empire great such as their economy, their intellectual achievements and their political institutions.

      The dog comes to represent Candy’s precarious situation as an elderly and increasingly unwanted part of society. He sees the dog as foreshadowing of his eventual fate when he grows too old to work. He is afraid of being cast out as a nuisance, unworthy of life or protection and despised by the younger generation. His proposal of giving all his money in exchange for a place on George and Lennie’s planned farm is a marker of his desperate situation. The prospective of leaving the farm briefly endows Candy with the confidence to stand up to Curley’s wife after she threatens Crooks. This suggestion of bravery and friendship is indicative of the type of man Candy would be if not for his loneliness, which has crippled his self-belief and has left him near destitute and subservient. The above characters demonstrate the pitfalls of loneliness, and the dangers it poses to people and their well-being. In contrast to this George and Lennie, through a mutually beneficial relationship, are able to deflect the negative attributes of their solitary professions by travelling together (â€Å"I got you.. and you got me†). Most people have needs that require social interaction with people, something which George and Lennie are able to achieve through their mutual friendship, in spit of their hard living conditions. This enables them to function in a more stable and happier way. Their stability stems from a mutual dream of their own farm (â€Å"We got a future†); a dream that sustains them throughout their journeying, and as a result they’re not aimless like so many of the other workers in their situation who squander their monthly pay packets on alcohol, gambling and female company. This is in contrast to other itinerant workers, whose lives do not depend upon anyone, and so nobody depends on them. The memory of a former occupant of the bunkhouse, who â€Å"upped and quit, the way a guy will† represents those who are resigned to their situation, and demonstrates the desultory manner in which they lead their lives. Lennie and George enjoy a symbiotic relationship in which each is able to obtain something from the other. From Lennie, George acquires an emotional baseline which enables him to better assert himself, as well as a responsibility and duty towards others. George is aware of a meanness in himself (â€Å"a real smart guy†¦ ain’t hardly ever a nice fella'†), but through looking after Lennie he pacifies his character (â€Å"well, I ain’t done nothing like that no more†). From George, Lennie acquires a carer and sense of purpose through their shared dream of buying a farm. The stability George is afforded from Lennie gives him the ability to stand up for people without fear of reproductions, because he has protection in the form of Lennie, and even if he were to be sent away he wouldn’t be alone. His behaviour was calm but unwavering when he confronted Curley and Curley’s wife. His compassionate nature is shown when he tries to change the subject in the bunkhouse when his cohabitants are pressuring Candy to kill his dog (â€Å"I seen a guy in Weed that had an Airedale could heard sheep†), but Carlson recognises this attempt and was â€Å"was not to be put off†. Candy recognises this moral integrity in George and so decides to trust him with his money and enter into a partnership with him and Lennie and buy a farm. Because of the proposed partnership with Candy they do, briefly, have a chance of realising their dream. Steinbeck here demonstrates that trust in people is required in order to achieve your dreams. After George kills Lennie he chooses not to buy and live on his own farm with Candy as a form of self-punishment, (â€Å"I’ll work my month†¦ an’ I’ll stay all night in some lousy cat house†). George now accepts that without Lennie his dream of owning a farm is dead, so chooses to face a life of cruel loneliness as a normal itinerant worker with no goals or aspirations other than to numb the pain of existence. In conclusion Steinbeck continually uses characters that, in the context of their society, live with prior afflictions (such as skin colour, infirmity, mental ability, and even gender) which hinder them from functioning in society as isolated individuals, so must form alliances and partnerships to enable them to survive. This element of symbiosis stems from the environment in which they exist, where a man is only as powerful as his ability to work. He attacks the capitalist system in which people are regarded as labour and not given the rights or freedoms to enable them to put down roots and start families. His criticism of the American Dream of hard work promising prosperity and success, and a compassionate look at its victims, are core themes throughout the book. The lack of social security and level of expectation upon the individual to support themselves, or else face starvation, forces people like Lennie into work to survive, even if they’re danger to themselves or others. The inevitable tragedy was Lennie’s slowness being kept secret from Lennie’s wife, who unknowingly set the tragedy in motion. Steinbeck tells us the only way to improve things is to enable trust and openness in the workforce, and that this depends on workers rights and freedoms being protected. Though the enabling of trust and openness in the workplace, people would be empowered to work from a position of strength rather than need, vulnerability and defensiveness; and with loneliness reduced as a consequence life would improve for everyone. When The Hero Turns Villain Darth Vader Are you tired of watching the same only scary Monsters and need a newer but humanistic Character then how about Star Wars Very own Darth Vader? The hero turned monster Anakin Skywalker, also known as Darth Vader. In the Prequels, it is clear he is just a tragic hero. Taken from his mother at a young age, loses her in adulthood, loses his hand, and gets chopped up by his best friend. Discovered as a slave on Tatooine by Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker had the potential to become one of the most powerful Jedi ever and was believed by some to be the prophesied Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. A hero of the Clone Wars, Anakin was caring and compassionate, but also had a fear of loss that would prove to be his downfall turning him to become Darth Vader. What makes Darth Vader Such a good Monster and not just a run in the mill villain like an evil beast. When it comes to being a monster, Darth Vader meets the requirements if we go off of Jeffrey Cohen Monster Culture (Seven Theses). According to Cohen, to be a good monster, it must meet the seven monster thesis. The first thesis is The Monsters Body is a Cultural Body, which incorporates fear, desire, anxiety, and fantasy, giving them life and uncanny independence (cohen 4). Vader is a six-foot-two inch cybernetic man shrouded in black showing no facial features with a deep robotic voice. He wields a lightsaber which by our definition is a laser sword that glows red. In their universe, the red lightsaber is only used by the evil sith lords who are the Judi sworn enemy. A Jedi is spiritual knights who are the protectors of the light side of the Force. Only a few people know what he looks like under the mask, which is a deformed scarred man with evil glaring eyes. Darth Vader can use the powers of the dark side of the Force to telekinetic repel objects or strangle a person to death. Al l of these features make him seem like an all-powerful monster no human can stop. The monster Always Escapes(Cohen4) the Monster itself turns immaterial and vanishes, to reappear someplace else. From Vader origin, Darth Vader was an escape artist. In the movie Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker is left for died my his former master Obi-Wan, only to be found moment before death my his new master Darth Sidious. In Star Wars New hope He escapes on to his spacecraft before the infamous death star was destroyed. Even in his end, Vader presence was still talked and praised upon. In the New Star Wars Trilogy, Vader gives influence on the young antagonist so much, so he wears a similar mask and with a cynical sounding voice translator. The Monster is the harbinger of Category Crisis (Cohen 6); Darth Vader is not your typical Monster he doesnt fit into a category. Vader once a hero and a lover who fought against evil as Anakin Skywalker and ended up making wrong choices which lead to his demise. Although Vader is human, he has gone through injuries no human could survive, such as being chopped up, severely burned and left for dead. From those misfortunes rising up and becoming the most dangerous man in the universe. The Monster Dwell at the gates of difference (Cohen 7), Vadar is also unknown to many in his world and the viewers who watch the First two Starwars Episodes before being spoiled. He is a mysterious cyberman who fights against our protagonist. Before the prequel movies, we had no history about Darth Vader or his evil ways, always wondering whats behind the mask. The Monster Polices the Borders of the Possible ( Cohen12), Technology is ever-growing, and one day well be about to mix man with machine. We already have voice changing tools and prosthetic limbs. Darth Vader is the future of what we expect a man to become if severely injured. From a psychological standpoint, he is what happens when a just person turns terrible. In our world, people turn bad all the time from the law-abiding citizen to the corrupted cop or solider. Fear of the Monster Is Really a Kind of Desire (Cohen 16) As humans, we have a desire to be sacred and wonder what it would be like to be evil. Darth Vader was vot ed best villain according to IGN.com and many other new outlets. People are fascinated with Vader, from his crisp suit to the scary dark voice. In Star Wars Rogue One, Critics say the best scene in the movie is when Darth Vader appears for the last stage. The rebel soldier was stuck in a dark room only for Vader to appear with his famous red lightsaber killing all the rebels as they cower in fear. On Halloween, kids and adults dress up the evil sith lord out of fandom. Lastly, The Monster stands at the threshold of becoming (Cohen 20) the author states that Monsters are our children, they ask us how we perceive the world. Darth Vader in all is a monster, but still has a human aspect in the world he only wanted to protect his loved ones, because of the wrong influences it turned him into what he is today. We can compare that to our children they can be influenced by all sorts of things and it up to us to teach them. Darth Vader is the only villain who has anchored a trilogy of films each as the antagonist and as the protagonist.
